Night had fallen, and Matt agreed to stay one more night with Sophie and Charles, he said he would sleep on the floor, so that he would not bother there regular routine. As he ate dinner with them Matt twirled his knife around.
Matt: “…what’s wrong with me…”
Sophie: “is something bothering you?”
Charles: “don’t trouble him dear, men don’t talk about there emotions”
Sophie: “this is a fact I know all too well”
Matt: “I’m too weak…”
Charles: “if you want you can help till the land in the morning, doing that will help you gain some muscle!”
Matt: “I’m Malfunctioning… I’m broken…”
Sophie: “your life seems hard… try to enjoy yourself, you only get one life…”
Charles: “… I’m heading off to sleep”
Sophie: “… hmm”
Matt: “sorry, I guess I’ve become a downer…”
Sophie: “it wasn’t you… a year ago our daughter ran away… she always used to tell us that she only had one life to live… and she didn’t want it to be taken advantage of by the masters…”
Matt: “masters?”
Sophie: “...yes… our protectors… are you so unaware of this?”
Matt: “I guess I don’t pay enough attention to my surroundings?”
Sophie: “all this talk is making me sad, I think I will clean up and than go to sleep as well, please do not make noise”
Matt: “thank you for dinner… and for everything”
Sophie: “it was nice having someone new to talk too…”
Sophie grabbed the plates and utensils and put them in the sink full of water, and began to wash them. Matt sat down against the wall cross his arms and closed his eyes… trying to force himself to duplicate… but it wasn’t working the fear was holding him back…
As the sun rose up so did Charles and his Wife, they woke Matt up shortly after, and ate breakfast. The two of them informed Matt that he would be heading into town on the back of a wagon that was carrying some crops and milk to sell to buy farming equipment and such. As Matt sat on the back of the truck with three other Men he watched the small farming community pass into the background… and could now only focus on the dirt path beneath him…
Man: “you hear about the Duke’s daughter?”
Man: “yea… they got a letter from her last week saying that she was still alive, and might be dropping by sometime in the next few months.”
Man: “if she’s part of the rebellion than her coming might put us in danger… I don’t like it…”
Man: “I wish life was like it used to be, before the Corruption…”
